And, it is always a good idea to be aware of some common problems that can arise in your AC unit.

10 Most Common AC Problems And How To Fix Them

1. Filters

One of the most common reasons for your unit to not work properly is clogged or dirty filters. Dirty or clogged filter blocks the airflow and reduces the efficiency significantly. They can also cause the AC unit to freeze.
For replacing the dirty filter follow the manufacturer’s guide as to how often you should change your filters. Some require monthly clean-up others every three months, while some are reusable and requires clean-up when they are dirty. One way to check is to see any light passes through the filter.

2. Thermostat

Another easy hack is to check that your thermostat (it controls the temperature setting) is switched on, is cleaned; it’s not being affected by sunlight and is on the correct setting.

3. Refrigerant Leaks

The AC unit will not function properly if the coolant starts to leak, it will cause the temperature to fluctuate. It is advisable that a trained technician do the service of your unit.

4. Drainage

If your drain line is clogged with dirt, lint or any other thing, the drain pan will fill up causing water to leak and damaging the unit.

5. Warm Air Is Leaking In

Inspect the window seals around your AC unit and ensure that hot air isn’t seeping or cold air isn’t leaking out. If this is the case, seal around your AC unit with pieces of weather-stripping.

6. TV  Is Too Close To Your Unit

7. It’s SUNNY Inside

If you have installed your unit in a sunny window, Your AC will have to work a lot more hard to cool up the room. Likewise, if the thermostat is placed in a sunny spot, it will register the long temperature. Your best bet? Install your unit in shades and with the curtain drawn all during the heat of summer.

8. Plants Are Crowding The Compressor

To function properly, the outdoor compressor needs a minimum of 2 to 3 feet of a place free. So, ensure this minimum distance for adequate airflow. Similarly, it is important to have a minimum of 5 feet between the top of the unit and any trees above.

9. The AC Stops Working

The thermostat is the main culprit if your unit shutdowns unexpectedly, check the batteries and change if required. If the thermostat isn’t the culprit check the beaker settings flip it to ON. If none of these work calls a technician for your unit’s service.
